When introduced to the marketplace in 1999, Nissan Xterra stood out. There was no mistaking it for what it was and few duplicated it. However, it wasn't the most practical of vehicles. Small interior, low and cramped, the 2005 is much improved.
With over 70 competitor SUV's, Xterra is a truck with a purpose. For the true adventurist, the all-new 2005 Xterra debuted at the New York International Auto Show in 2004. Sticking to its original purpose, the new 2005 Xterra builds on itself with many improvements, including more room, added features and enhanced off-road performance systems.
The changes in the new Xterra came about per customer requests, says Nissan. Power, drivability, smoother on-road dynamics, more interior space and cargo room were all important. A cornerstone vehicle for Nissan, Xterra's styling is similar, but different. It retains its rugged exterior, including large, flared fenders, versatile roof rack with latchable lid and new rear bumper with side steps. The hood is large and encompasses Nissan's signature SUV strut-style grille.
For 2005, Xterra's wheelbase has been extended two inches creating a smoother ride and more interior room. Width has also been increased by a little over two inches and height 1.9 inches.

Over the years, Xterra has maintained a large following of loyal owners looking for "purposeful" styling and practical functionality. Nissan has tried to update its look without compromising what those owners were drawn to the Xterra for.
Keeping Xterra's simple interior-what drivers need, but nothing they don't-Nissan keeps the flexibility with a 60/40 split folding stadium-style rear seat, available fold down front passenger seat (for carrying those long ladders), a larger console and glove compartment and unique blue seat fabric.
In the cargo area is easy-to-clean flooring and 10 cargo area utility hooks. An adjustable channel system in the cargo area making it easier to haul gear. A built-in first aid kit completes Xterra's versatile features.
To enhance Xterra's off-road capabilities, Nissan built it on a truck, rather than a car-based platform. What you sacrifice in ride, you gain in off-roading manners. A new platform (modified F-Alpha) developed for the Armada is used, with steel double-wishbone front suspension and stability and rigid leaf spring rear suspension.
Under the hood is a standard 4.0-liter DOHC V6 engine with 265-plus horsepower. Two advanced transmissions are available: electronically controlled 5-speed automatic (350Z), modified and a 6-speed manual tuned to driving performance and fuel economy.
Xterra for 2005 is available in two models (S and SE), each offered with standard 4.0-liter V6 coupled with either manual or automatic transmission, and 4-or 2-WD configuration.
