Having
driven the new generation Miata MX-5 several times in the past year we've
generally liked it, and in fact, find it a more substantial car than the model
preceeding it. This time around we weren't as enamored, but not sure if we
can put our finger on it.
The ride in this particular MX-5 Miata seemed harsh and rough on bumps.
It took a day or so to get reacquainted with Mazda's 6-speed manual transmission.
Standard equipment on our Grand Touring MX-5 Miata was plentiful and
includes the usual A/C, power windows/locks/mirrors, remote keyless entry,
faux leather door trim, floor mats, foglamps, aluminum hood and a decent audio
system. This edition, along with the Touring edition features Mazda's In-dash
six-disc CD changer, along with AM/FM Bose radio with seven speakers.
New or enhanced for the 2008 model year are the six-disc CD changer
audio system available on the Touring and Grand Touring models, driver's seat
lifter with manual adjustment and standard tire pressure monitoring system.
The power retractable hard top is a treat and was introduced in the
2007 model year. Providing year-round comfort, the hard top opens and closes
in 12 seconds, making it the fastest power-operated retractable hard top in
the U.S. market. It also leaves more luggage space. Although some Miata owners can be very creative when it comes
to traveling long distances in their Miata's. One owner I met on a convertible
tour had all his shirts and pants folded neatly in the trunk itself; no luggage!
Fit perfectly.
The options
on our MX-5Miata included Suspension Package (Limited slip differential, sport
tuned suspension, Bilstein shocks,$500), Sirius Satellite Radio ($430), Interior
trim package (door switch panel-brushed aluminum look, instrument panel decorative
trim panel, brushed aluminum look, $515), Premium package (antitheft alarm,
Mazda advanced keyless entry system, Xenon headlights, DSC with traction control,
$1,250.
Without question the MX-5 Miata has plenty of safety features, including
dual front airbags with passenger-side deactivation switch, side impact airbags
and door beams, antitheft engine immobilizer and ABS.
The MX-5 Miata two-seat roadster is available in four trim levels:
SV, Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. Mileage varies little between automatic
and manual transmissions, by one mile-per-gallon. It's fun driving the manual
and some cannot imagine a Miata in automatic. We grew weary of the "sports-sounding"
exhaust upon acceleration, although I know manufacturer's pay big bucks for
this.
The days
of the "inexpensive" little sports car from Miata are over. The
MX-5, so now named, is running with the big boys. Although there are less
costly models you can opt for, if you want all the amenities, you have to
cough up the bucks. Still, it's hard to beat MX-5's fun and spirit. Year after
year, it wins accolades from reviewers and enthusiasts alike. It's fun, "cute"
and still has lots of personality. And, it's dependable with little maintenance
required. I'm still driving my '99 Miata and all I do is change the oil. Last
year I replaced the "original" battery!
Year after year, the Miata continues to be included in the year's "Ten
Best" and has received more than 150 awards in almost 20 years. Mazda
has sold more than 800,000 units; a phenomenal record after all these years.
