2009 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring AWD

Reviewed by Susan Frissell

New to Mazda in 2007, the car-based CX-9 is the first three-row SUV from the manufacturer. Following the introduction of its sibling the CX-7, the CX-9 is larger and longer, but based on the stretched platform of the Ford Edge crossover. Quieter and more agile than its cousin, the CX-9 has a more attractive, luxurious interior.

The third row, although small, can fit two adults. Cargo space is compromised when carrying a full load of passengers, but seats can be folded down when more room to tote gear is needed.

This four-door SUV is available in three trim levels: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. Our test vehicle, the top-of-the-line Grand Touring all-wheel-drive hit a hefty $40,000 and although comes well equipped bids the question whether/not one can make do with the CX-7.

Front and all-wheel-drive versions are available on the CX-9. Handling is tight and the ride firm, but is steady over most road surfaces. The second row is a 60/40 split and slides forward and rearward making it easier for passengers to get in/out. Unfortunately, first rear reliability for the CX-9 has been below average.

Our option list on the Grand Touring CX-9 included a cargo net ($40), pearl paint ($200), Sirius Satellite Radio ($430), blind spot monitoring system ($200) and Moonroof/Bose, 6-CD package (277-watt, 10-speaker Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound System with audio pilot, in-dash 6-CD changer, winter or sunshine moonroof shade, power open/close hatch, $1,760), and GT assist package ( DVD navigation system with voice command, touch screen, rear view camera, $2,500.

We are surprised at the lower than average reliability rating; unusual for Mazda vehicles. At this time we don't have any details.

CX-9 for 2009 has a few new updates, including a more powerful (and needed) engine. When introduced in 2007, the CX-9 sported a 3.50liter (263 hp.), so the upped 3.7-liter V6 with 273 horsepower for 2009 is welcome. Rated at only 15/21 mpg., though, makes the 3.7-liter a luxury. Other changes for 2009 include a power hatch lid operated by the key fob. This is handy if you've got an armful of groceries.

The blind-spot monitor for 2009 is a handy, one-can-easily-get-accustomed-to-feature that makes one feel safer when navigating driveways. Not foolproof on the highway, though. You've got to notice that yellow light flashing. If you're not paying attention, and we know what that means today, you could miss it. There is no substitution for keeping your wits about you and remaining aware of all the vehicles in your vicinity.

The CX-9 operates in front-wheel-drive during normal driving conditions but goes into all-wheel-drive mode when accelerating hard or when wheels slip. Stability control and traction control also go into making for good driving in all conditions.
