This
is one fun little sport wagon. Although there isnt a whole lot of extra
spaceand those blessed with long legs have a snug fit in backthe
idea of a wagon fulfills that "practical" need in us. A performance
sport wagon, a different idea, but one thats taken off. Subarus Impreza WRX nameplate is available in two models, sedan and sport wagon, both touted as five passenger vehicles. In this category, Subaru can also claim to be the "only" manufacturer who offers all-wheel drive.
First introduced in 2002, Impreza models get just minor upgrades for the new year, including a few standard features: keyless entry for 2.5 RS sedan and Outback Sport, and cruise for 2.5TS. Subaru has Impreza models slotted in its "performance" category, featuring its intercoole turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the WRX. The WRX serves as the basic vehicle for Subaru Impreza rally cars that compete in the World Rally Championship and SCCA Pro Rally series.
WRX models are set somewhat apart from other Impreza offerings by their unique features, including exclusive upholstery and the silver metallic bezels for the audio system and dash vents. Aluminum-alloy pedal covers are standard on those models with 5-speed manual transmission. WRX comes equipped with larger brake rotors (11.4 inches) and offers optional 17-inch BBS forged aluminum alloy wheels.
In its first eight months on sale in 2002, WRX sold some 18,000 units. An unusual vehicle with its All-Wheel drive and turbocharged engine, few could match WRX in offering. For 2003, Subaru introduces the limited edition WRX with a limited run of 1,500 Sonic Yellow vehicles. Our test vehicle happened to be the Sonic Yellow version, which we loved, but not everyone did. What we liked most was that it was easily identifiable in a parking lot full of look-alikes. Also included on this special edition WRX is the rear spoiler.

The WRX, with standard five-speed manual transmission, is equipped with Subarus Continuous All-Wheel drive system. When opting for the four-speed electronic automatic transmission, WRX is teamed with Variable Torque Distribution All-Wheel drive.
Although small, WRX Sport Wagon is a solid, well handling vehicle. Although Rally inspired, WRX is plenty capable on everyday roads. The ride is fairly quiet and comfortable. One thing we thought inadequate is WRXs gear shifter knob. We thought it too small for most hands, particularly male. My hand kept slipping off it, making it difficult to shift. The shift itself was stiff and required two hands to get the transmission into reverse. Perhaps this was because the vehicle was fairly new with 5,000-some miles on the speedo. Maybe it will loosen up, but it was awkward to maneuver, and hard to hold on to.
We also experienced a couple of hard starts. One after the car had been sitting all day, another in the morning after sitting all night.
Also new for 2003 on Impreza WRX models are such standard high-performance features as sport tuned four-wheel independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, four-channel, four-sensor anti-lock brakes and 16-inch alloy wheels and tires. Seventeen-inch tires are also available through the dealer. Limited slip differential is also included on both the Sport Wagon and the Sedan.
WRXs interior is comfortable and friendly. Nothing fits like a sport-design seat. Our Sport Wagons four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel carried a Mom0 brand logo in its center. Radio and ventilation knobs are a snazzy silver metallic, matching the silver shifter knob. The interior is black, which played nicely against the exterior Sonic Yellow.
This is a spirited little sport wagon for the enthusiast who wants performance, safety and practicality. As with all Subaru models, the All-Wheel drive system is their claim to fame and a much appreciated feature here in the Midwest.
If youre going to go WRX, go Sonic Yellow!
