Lane Drivers of America Unite
Here's a new one: a grassroots campaign proding slowpokes out of the left lane!
As traffic becomes increasingly congested, Left Lane Drivers of America says it's time for citizens to reclaim the left lane!! Spokesman J.S. Tosti claims that more and more these days you find slow drivers in the left lane, causing no end of headache and frustration to those who have places to go and people to see!
Some of the offenders, says Tosti, are timid and tentative drivers, some are completely oblivious to what is going on around them. Then there are those who are self-appointed "hall monitors regulating what they alone have determined to be proper driving speeds."
Whatever the case, cries the grassroots group, it's time to raise awareness, trumpet the message and let slow drivers know that if they are not left lane drivers, get out of the left lane!
A loosely affiliated, yet diverse group, Left Lane Drivers of America share the common objective of reducing the left lane congestion on our freeways and multi-lane highways by politely encouraging drivers to move over.
To help slow drivers get the point, Left Lane Drivers of America offers a copyrighted decal to display on your car's windshield. Mounted right up front the $29.99 decal prominently displays the driver's sentiment in the offending driver's rear-view mirror. The decal reads "MOVE OVER" and has a large arrow showing the offender where to go (over). Displayed backwards on the windshield, it can be read by the car in front of you.
According to Tosti the sign, although it doesn't mince words, isn't meant to be rude or pushy. Rather, it is meant to remind the slow driver to either pick up the pace or make room for those drivers who choose to drive faster.
Bottom line: Moving over is a matter of courtesy. A matter of safety, one is expected to do his/her part to help traffic flow smoothly. It is the law in many states to stay to the right except to pass. With this in mind, Left Lane Drivers of America can be regarded as doing something positive to help improve traffic flow today.
It seems to me that a good deal of drivers on the road covet being a "left lane" driver, passing those of us (at breakneck speeds) who choose to drive the speed limit. It's almost impossible to drive the speed limit on the highway, and if you do, you're taking your life in your hands.
Supporters of the grassroots group believe their Move Over message has the potential to help reduce instances of road rage, hazardous driving and untimely, often deadly accidents. Releasing the pressure valve can only help driving conditions by giving the left lane back to fast drivers.
Historically the "fast lane," the left lane traditionally belonged to those who felt the need to go faster than anyone else on the road. Now however, claim the Left Lane Drivers advocates, the "fast lane" has been taken over by the slowwwwwwww drivers causing a lot of unnecessary stress.
Therefore, providing slow drivers with a polite but firm reminder such as the windshield decal will nudge them to pick up the pace and speed up or move over to another lane.
If you've encountered slow left lane drivers, write us and share your story about your experience. Is it frustrating for you or do you take it in stride? Is a grassroots group like this necessary? Or just an excuse to drive as fast as you want?
