Helpful Hints to Keep Those Wheels Looking Good

By Susan Frissell

Today's wheels are available in a wide variety of finishes. The type of finish is the basis for selecting the right product.

Information about how to clean wheels is included today by the manufacturer. Many recommend Eagle One A2Z All Wheel Cleaner.

Wheels come in a combination of finishes, such as anodized aluminum, polished aluminum, painted, clear-coated, chrome plated, and machine finished aluminum.

Most of today's "factory" wheels, especially the alloy type, are expensie, high-quality products. Therefore, it's important to keep them maintained. Here are some tips:

1. Don't clean the wheels while they are still hot or warm from driving. HIgh temperatures can accelerate chemical reactions and cause inadvertent staining.

2. Clean and rinse one wheel at a time to prevent the cleaner from drying on the wheel.

3. Clean the wheels before washing the vehicle; this prevents the water from drying on the paint and will provide enough time to clean the wheels.

4. If there is an accumulation of road grime, brake dust or corrosion, you'll need to brush the surface first, but be careful of bristles that are too hard or stiff. This could scratch the finish. Eagle One suggests using an old paint brush (3.5" wide).

5. If you live where there are cold winters and/or high humidity, there is more opportunity for corrosion due to the salt. This is hard on chrone, aluminum and painted surfaces. To help protect your wheels, wax them with a high quality wax. This will improve the longevity and apparance of the wheels.
