Women With Wheels began publication in the Spring of 1989. Conceived on a napkin over dinner, it became the first automotive publication written expressly for women. Because todays women are savvy, Women With Wheels became an important publication for those women (and men) who wanted to become informed about such things as basic automotive maintenance, automotive warranties, accessories and recalls, buying or leasing and what to look for when taking a test drive, among many other things. Women With Wheels compiled all the automotive news and synthesized it into an easily readable format.
Women all over the country began to rely on Women With Wheels as their personal consultant to know when to perform preventive maintenance on their cars, how to choose a mechanic, what to do to prepare their cars for seasonal changes, and to learn the difference between tire brands.
The printed newsletter version of Women With Wheels has been read by consumersmen and women-automotive manufacturers, public relations professionals, and fellow automotive journalists. Each quarterly issue was ad-free and included such features as test drive reviews, auto recalls, Autosmarts (automotive tidbits), Autograms (industry news), reviews of automotive books and videos, personal interest stories, and how-tos. Over the years, WWW has featured articles by several freelance journalists, adding a variety of viewpoints.
The Publisher and editor, Susan Frissell, Ph.D. has been writing about cars professionally since the 1980s. Her syndicated column "Car Concerns" carried by MotorNewsMedia for six years ran in some 300 newspapers nationwide, including such papers as the Joliet Herald News (IL), Reno Gazette-Journal (NV), and Chippewa Valley Newspapers (WI).
